    That depends on the …
That depends on the breed your laying hens are – if you have dual purpose hens, that means they are used for both meat and laying. However, meditterranean hens, such as leghorns, are not very good meat birds. I’ve heard of people eating sexlinks, but I don’t think that’s what they were bred for.

Then, you have your coronish crosses – birds that are good for nothing other than meat. The poor things can’t even survive past the age of about 6 months, from the information i’ve gathered.

    There are many …
There are many reasons why hens sometimes stop laying. Here are a few:

    1) She may be moulting. She resume once her moult has finished.

    2) She could be eggbound! If she is, her abdomen should be swollen and hard. If this is the case, you can contact me and I would be more than happy to help you.

    3) She may be stressed. This can be caused by a new food, a sudden change in light, a sudden change in weather, new flock members, etc.

These are the main reasons why a hen would stop laying.

I kept chickens for a while and their earlobes are soft and feel a bit like a people earlobe. My chickens liked me to rub their earlobes, like a dog likes their ears rubbed. If they got upset and I rubbed their earlobes they would calm down. One hen would even get up on the perches and put her ear on my hand to get her earlobes rubbed. :)
