Cool ideas here, thanks. I honestly took the plunge and got me some chickens last week! Now I have so many eggs like you wouldn't believe. You might be interested in these egg recipes.

First off let me say I have been a longtime fan, first time commenter. I figured I should probably say thanks for posting this piece (and all your others), and I'll be back!

Cockerels, do get on if they have grown up together, although if there are girls around they will challenge each other.Different breeds of hens tend to mix.
References :
We keep multiple roosters (I have about 8 right now), and most of them get along. Generally, ones that are raised together tend to get along better, but eventually, testosterone may overtake them and they'll just start scrapping.

Roosters are pretty indiscriminate - a hen is a hen to them, and they'll mount whoever they can catch. And most likely will fight amongst themselves eventually unless you plan on maintaing a large flock of hens, or penning them separately.

If you want a rooster of each breed, I would recommend placing them in breeding trios, where each rooster can have a couple of hens of their own breed in their own yard or little house. I've seen some pretty ingenious designs for creating individual trio houses.

If you let them all free range together, you will never know if your eggs are going to hatch out chicks of that specific breed, and with multiple roosters, each brood will most likely have DNA from every rooster. If you plan on breeding, it's alot harder to sell chicks if the buyer can't identify what the bird is.

Also, from my experience, araucana roosters tend to be very nice - and leghorn roosters can get very big and aggressive. If you are mixing different breeds, make sure your roosters are of similar sizes so everyone stands a fighting chance.

I recommend everyone who plans on owning chickens pick up a copy of Storey's Guide to Raising Chickens - it's a great reference source that any chicken owner will benefit from having. Get it at the feed store when you pick up your chicks!
References :
Stonefield Hill Farm, fancy poultry breeder

You can but they may fight, some breeds will fight every once in a while if they grow up together but if they dont they will kill one another. Its best to have hens with them to keep company, they dont seem happy at all with just roos. ANd they will not except hens if they been round roos there life.

No, any male will breed with any hen a roo is a roo, all chickens are the smae cromosomes and genetic, there just different colors and looks.

If you have one male with a couple hens they will breed, no matter what there breed is.

U can have a male of each kind, but eventually they will not get along, without hens there un happy.
References :
own, raise, breed, and sell chickens and ducks

If you're only getting male birds, they won't be happy. I don't think they will mate with the other males. Ha, Hah, He, Hee
