NUTHATCH
The nuthatch is a plump bird about the size of a great tit that resembles a small woodpecker. It is blue-grey above and whitish below, with chestnut on its sides and under its tail. It has a black stripe on its head, a long black pointed bill, and short legs. It breeds in central and southern England and in Wales, and is resident, with birds seldom travelling far from the woods where they hatch.

WHERE TO SEE THEM
Best looked for in mature woods and established parkland in central and southern England and Wales, on the sides of tree trunks and underside of branches. Occasional sightings in Scotland.

WHEN TO SEE THEM
All year round.

WHAT THEY EAT
Insects, hazel nuts, acorns, beechmast and other nuts and seed.

    @GoldfinchGarden I know Sandy Lodge very well. Used to be a member, but when they condoned the cull of Canada Geese in the 90′s The very things they are supposed to protect, I cancelled my membership. Still go occasionally to look around. I prefer the reserve, much better environment for animals, birds, insects and plants etc..

    Great Capture Paul. I was trold they were at the RSPB. I spent 4 hours there and all I got to film was flowers and a Crow lol A couple of tits and a chaffinch was all we saw. Went back to Reserve and saw a 100% more activity. And it does not cost £4 to park ;)

    @thebirdgarden I noticed they were often in the same area, so I thought I’d get up early before the crowds and put some seeds and nuts on the fence where I’d seen them. I got my camera focused and recording, then I hid behind a tree… lol My kids are right I’m becoming a NERD
