I converted a lean-to (shack) into a chicken coop. The coop is approx 5′ x 9′. I have a book called “back to basics” that we got at a garage sale. It had some guide lines and measurements that I utilized. I used mainly old plywood and wood we had laying around so I didn’t have to buy much wood. The hens will be six months old in a couple of weeks, and that’s about the time they start laying eggs. We got 4 – Rhode Island Reds (brown eggs), 2 – Buff Orphingtons (brown eggs), and 4 – Americanas (blue or green eggs)

A brief documentary of my set-up for raising meat chickens. I raised 12 colored rangers from J.M. Hatchery with this chicken tractor and run. The chicks went into the tractor at age 1.5 weeks, and initially I moved it every couple days. At about 4 weeks old, I started moving it once a day. By 5 weeks old, moving the tractor was not keeping up with the poop, so we added the run that you see here. In the video they are 10 weeks old and due to be harvested in 2 days. All 12 chickens have been very healthy and active. I have had no losses. In the 10 weeks, they ate about 220 pounds of food, and averaged a little under five pounds per bird. Food conversion ratio = 3.8 lbs of feed: 1 lb dressed weight.

Raising backyard chickens for eggs is a growing trend as the locavore movement gains ground in the city. But Declan Walsh is taking the process further. We had been raising layer hens for six years and raising chickens for their meat seemed like a natural progression, said Walsh, who, when not tending his brood in his Red Hook backyard, is director of community outreach at John Jay College of Criminal Justice. Walsh raises the same breed used by commercial hatcheries — Cornish rock broilers — until they are ready for the local slaughterhouse. Walsh, who is organizing an event at the college in December with Just Food, a non-profit working to unite city residents and local farmers, discusses the pros and cons of raising chickens in the city. Its easier to find somebody to take care of them than a dog, said Walsh, because theres a built-in incentive — a great egg.
