BULLY CHICKENS DELAY EGG PRODUCTION-RAISING CHICKENS

This video was first broadcasted July 21, 2009. Separating pullets because of our bully bardrocks. When our alpha pullet-Charity laid the first egg, she started to fight will all of our young pullets. Even her crop the red topnotch on her head was larger and drooping over. The Americaunas were born the same day on March 01, 2009. But didn’t have the fight in them to protect themselves, and were constantly on the run. They didn’t start laying eggs, until we separated them. On the very first day we moved the Americaunas to their our chicken yard. The first egg was laid in the early evening. A chicken will delay laying eggs, if she doesn’t feel the environment is safe to raise her chicks.

INTRODUCING NEW CHICKENS TO THE BARNYARD-RAISING CHICKENS

Introducing new chickens to the brood isn’t very easy to do. This is the morning after when the new pullets were introduced to the brood. Because hens often are very brutal and can kill baby chicks because they weren’t incubated by a residential hen. We put the new pullets right along side the bardrock hens in a confined area.

Even adding a pullet of the same breed isn’t a sure and safe friendly even. Yesterday our hens fought almost to the death. It’s best to buy the amount of chicks that you plan on having in the future. Just because they are the same breed is no gaurantee they will co-exist happily.

Chicken Coop – We just finished the coop and bought 10 hens!

I converted a lean-to (shack) into a chicken coop. The coop is approx 5′ x 9′. I have a book called “back to basics” that we got at a garage sale. It had some guide lines and measurements that I utilized. I used mainly old plywood and wood we had laying around so I didn’t have to buy much wood. The hens will be six months old in a couple of weeks, and that’s about the time they start laying eggs. We got 4 – Rhode Island Reds (brown eggs), 2 – Buff Orphingtons (brown eggs), and 4 – Americanas (blue or green eggs)

Turkey Raising Chickens

I got a pet turkey that was very intent on sitting, but we don’t have a tom for her yet. So we did the next best thing and stuck 12 bantam chicken eggs under her and now she is taking care of them as her own. The chicks are lemon blues with a tinge of yellow in their feathers and the two black ones may be brassy backs.
