Our fun, lively and informative chicken afternoons provide you with all you need to know about keeping your poultry healthy and happy.

Ideal for first time chicken owners, or those thinking about taking up chicken keeping.
We give you practical advice, tips and support in all aspects of poultry husbandry.
For those already well versed in the art of chicken maintenance, we also offer more advanced courses.
However, we like to encourage a mixed range of ability on course, so you not only learn from us, you learn from each other.

We love daft questions and are committed to making these days as fun and helpful as possible. A definite afternoon out with a difference, for all the family, in a beautiful and rural South Yorkshire location.

Once we’ve done all the chicken schmoozing, the Hen Party will begin.
We have an informal chat, with a question and answer session in our teepee with traditional tea, cake and sandwiches. (Don’t worry, there’ll be no chicken sandwiches on offer!)

And of course, nobody walks away empty handed. They’ll be a goody bag for every guest full of handy hints and hen treats!

Sadly, building a chicken coop is not exactly as easy as just hammering some wood and wire mesh together. You need to understand and employ proper building materials, correct ventilation, insulation, lighting, nesting and perching, correct litter collection, and many other factors.

Strategy # 5. – Light Source:

If you want a good source of light and warmth for your chickens during the cold months of the year and a solid source of ventilation during the hot months, then be sure to install the chicken coop windows facing the southside where they will receive direct sunlight throughout the day.

On another note, if your goal is to raise chickens that will produce great eggs all year round, then you should look into an electrical source of light. You should be able to easily install an electrical light at the height of the chicken coop’s ceiling which will help keep your chickens warm and help them lay better chicken eggs throughout the year. One ceiling light should be enough for a small scale chicken coop, for larger chicken coops though, try to install one electrical ceiling light per every 30 – 40 feet.

Light source is a must

If you want your chickens to lay plenty of eggs throughout the year, they need to be kept warm. A proper light source will ensure that your chickens are kept warm even during the nighttime or during winter when it gets much colder. Depending on the size of your coop, you may need multiple light sources.

A chicken coop is a building where chickens are kept. Interiors usually have nest boxes for egg laying, and also perches for the birds to sleep on. Coops for meat birds often have neither of these features. There may also be an attached outdoor run, and both the interior and exterior floor of the chicken coop is often covered with a material, such as straw or wood chips, to contain the chicken waste and to allow easier cleanup of the chicken coop. Most have some kind of ventilation to help air out any odors that may occur.
